{"id":1124,"date":"2018-12-11T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/?p=1124"},"modified":"2018-12-10T13:05:42","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:05:42","slug":"beyond-indiana-jones-backpedaling-ark-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/11\/beyond-indiana-jones-backpedaling-ark-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Indiana Jones: Backpedaling on Ark Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After my blog last week expressing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/04\/beyond-indiana-jones-ark-of-the-covenant-claim\/\">skepticism<\/a> over the news story announcing the discovery of the Ark of the Covenant, LiveScience.com has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/sorry-indiana-jones-the-ark-of-the-covenant-is-not-inside-this-ethiopian-church\">walked back<\/a> its story.\u00a0 The fact is that, lurid tales of killer priests and fabulous treasure aside, a Western professor has seen the ark in the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Man who Saw the Ark<\/h3>\n<p>Edward Ullendorff saw the ark inside the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion.\u00a0 Ullendorff was a professor at University of London&#8217;s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).\u00a0 He also served as an army officer attached to the British armed forces in 1941.\u00a0 And he was with them, when British forces took Ethiopia from the fascist Italians.\u00a0\u00a0 With soldiers to his back and no one to stop him, Ullendorff had access to the ark within the church.<\/p>\n<p>When he was still alive, Ullendorff gave an <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1992-06-09\/news\/wr-237_1_stone-chapel\/3\">interview<\/a> to the L. A. Times in 1992 debunking Graham Hancock&#8217;s claims.\u00a0 Ullendorff stated that he saw &#8220;a wooden box, but it&#8217;s empty.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 He described it as a &#8220;Middle- to late-medieval construction, when these were fabricated ad hoc.&#8221;\u00a0 He maintained that the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion possessed a medieval period replica of the ark.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Ethiopian Replicas<\/h3>\n<p>These replicas are a common feature of Ethiopian Coptic churches, and none of them are the real Ark of the Covenant.\u00a0 They serve an important role as an idealized place of veneration and religious focus.<\/p>\n<p>These arks function like the altars in Roman Catholic churches.\u00a0 In Roman Catholic churches, the altar is not really a place were consecrated offerings are incinerated with fire &#8212; they are\u00a0technically offering tables that are called <em>altars<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The tabot (or &#8220;ark&#8221;) in Ethiopian churches serve a similar purpose.\u00a0 The word <em>tabot <\/em>comes from the Aramaic <em>tebuta<\/em>, which descended from the Egyptian <em>tbt<\/em>, &#8220;box, chest.&#8221;\u00a0 The purpose of the tabot is to remind the onlooker of the Mosaic law and the tablets of the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n<p>But this is not a the first time an outsider has seen an Ethiopian ark.\u00a0 In 2002, a Scottish church <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/africa\/1811267.stm\">returned<\/a> a tabot to Ethiopia.\u00a0 Photographs of these <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tabot#\/media\/File:%C3%84thiopien_Tabot_Linden-Museum_90290.jpg\">tabot<\/a> show that they are nothing like the original Ark of the Covenant.\u00a0 They are small wood boxes that a single priest carried over his head.\u00a0 In contrast, the original Ark was 2.5 cubits (45 inches) long by 1.5 cubits (27 inches) wide and high (Exod 25:10) and the priests carried it on poles (Exod 25:13-14).<\/p>\n<p>No doubt exists that these Ethiopian arks remain important religious and historical artifacts.\u00a0 But they are only historically significant to the medieval world of Axum, not the late bronze age world of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After my blog last week expressing skepticism over the news story announcing the discovery of the Ark of the Covenant, LiveScience.com has walked back its story.\u00a0 The fact is that, lurid tales of killer priests and fabulous treasure aside, a Western professor has seen the ark in the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion.&hellip;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/11\/beyond-indiana-jones-backpedaling-ark-claims\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1130,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"spay_email":"","jetpack_publicize_message":""},"categories":[25,6],"tags":[140,143,145,146,144,73,147],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ark_Update.jpg","jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Beyond Indiana Jones: Backpedaling on Ark Claims - Egypt and the Bible<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"LiveScience.com has walked back its story on discovering the Ark of the Covenant.
