{"id":166,"date":"2018-10-02T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T15:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/?p=166"},"modified":"2018-09-30T15:17:17","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T22:17:17","slug":"baal-zephon-lord-of-the-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/02\/baal-zephon-lord-of-the-north\/","title":{"rendered":"Baal-Zephon, Lord of the North"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\nAfter the Israelites camped before Pi-Hahiroth, they wandered in the desert near the fortress Migdol.\u00a0 They camped between Migdol, Pi-Hahiroth, the Reed Sea, and a looking post nearby known as Baal-Zephon.\r\n\r\nUnlike the previous Egyptian toponyms, Baal-Zephon has a Semitic etymology. \u00a0Baal is common to many Semitic languages and means \u201clord,\u201d a term often used for a god. \u00a0The name, Baal, was used during the Old Babylonian period for a variety of deities including Marduk (bel) but is perhaps best known from the Bible as an epithet for the northwest Semitic storm-god (Hadad\/Adad).\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe biblical text parallels \u201cbefore Pi-Hahiroth\u201d and \u201cbefore Baal-Zephon,\u201d implying that the two sites are adjacent (Exod 14:9).\u00a0 <em>Papyrus Sallier IV<\/em> mentioned Ball-Zephon in the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">To Am\u016bn of the temple of the gods; to the Ennead that is in Pi-Pta\u1e25; to Ba\u02c1alim, to \u1e32adesh, and to Anyt; (to) <strong>Ba<\/strong><strong>\u02c1<\/strong><strong>al Zephon<\/strong> (<em>b<\/em><em>\u02c1<\/em><em>r-\u1e0f<\/em><em>\u021c<\/em><em>pn<\/em>), to Sopd.\r\n\r\n<cite><em>Papyrus Sallier IV<\/em> (vs. 1:6)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Hyksos who worshipped the storm god associated this god with the Egyptian storm god, Seth.\u00a0 The Egyptians continued to use this association after the Hyksos left Egypt.\u00a0 Given that the author of <em>Papyrus Sallier IV <\/em>wrote the toponym Ba\u02c1al-Zephon with the Seth character; Baal in this toponym may be a reference to Seth.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe second element of the toponym, the word <em>zephon<\/em>, means \u201cnorth\u201d in Semitic languages. However, Zephon by itself also appears as a toponym in <em>Amarna Letter 274<\/em>, most likely as a name of a Levantine city.
