{"id":172,"date":"2018-10-30T08:00:05","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T15:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/?p=172"},"modified":"2018-10-29T20:21:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T03:21:43","slug":"reed-red-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/30\/reed-red-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"The Reed (Red) Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\nAfter the Israelites escaped Egypt through the Wadi Tumilat, they did something hard to fathom.\u00a0 Instead of making a clean break down the west coast of the Sinai as they had intended, they turn northward.\u00a0 They made their way towards the Way of Horus, the military road that runs along the north Sinai.\u00a0 After that, they &#8220;wandered&#8221; in the wilderness aimlessly to lure Pharaoh into thinking they were lost (Exod 14:3).\r\n\r\nFrom a strategic perspective, this move makes little sense.\u00a0 The Israelites essentially boxed themselves in.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/18\/pi-hahiroth-estate-temple-wadjet\/\">Pi-Hahiroth<\/a> was to the west, desert to the south, Pharaoh&#8217;s chariots to the east, and their backs to the sea.\u00a0 Strategically, this was the worst possible position to be in.\u00a0 Trapped with nowhere to run.\u00a0\u00a0 And yet, the sea opened up and the Israelites escaped what would otherwise be certain death.\r\n\r\nIn several sections, the biblical narrative simply calls this body of water the \u201cSea.\u201d\u00a0 But some texts (e.g., Exod 13:18 and 15:22) refer to it as the <em>yam suf<\/em> (\u05d9\u05b7\u05dd \u05e1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3).\u00a0 The translation of <em>yam suf<\/em> as the \u201cRed Sea\u201d entered into English Bibles through the Greek Septuagint (ca. 250 BCE) translation \u0395\u03c1\u03c5\u03b8\u03c1\u1f70 \u03b8\u03ac\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03c3\u03b1. However, in Hebrew <em>yam suf<\/em> means \u201cSea of Reeds.\u201d\r\n\r\nThis place name most likely comes from the Semitic-Egyptian <em>p<\/em><em>\u021c<\/em><em> \u1e6fwfy, <\/em>\u201cThe Reeds.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Papyrus Anastasi III<\/em> (2:11-12) mentions this body of water and states that the \u201cfoliage and greenery\u201d of Pi-Hahiroth was nearby (<em>Papyrus Anastasi III<\/em>, 3:3).\u00a0 Thus, the <em>p<\/em><em>\u021c<\/em><em> \u1e6fwfy<\/em> was probably one of the lakes (possibly Lake Ballah or Lake Timsah) that were part of the marshy area along what is now the Suez Canal.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<em>P.
