{"id":899,"date":"2018-11-20T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T16:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/?p=899"},"modified":"2018-11-20T03:21:17","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T11:21:17","slug":"parting-red-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/20\/parting-red-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Parting of the Red Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Movie versions of the exodus portray the parting of the Reed (Red) Sea as massive vertical walls of water that the Israelites passed between.\u00a0 The Egyptians are shown blindly following after the Israelites, possibly out of fear of Pharaoh.\u00a0 But I have to ask.\u00a0 Who in their right mind would enter into a box canyon of water?<\/p>\n<p>The story of the Reed Sea is more nuanced than it may first appear.\u00a0 In a previous blog, we discussed that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/30\/reed-red-sea\/\">Reed Sea<\/a> was one of the marshy lakes located near where the Suez Canal exists today.\u00a0 It was in the estuary where the Pelusiac branch of the Nile emptied into the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>But some details of the account are often overlooked that reveal much about the story.\u00a0 The first is that the \u201cwall\u201d of water mentioned in Exod 14:22 and 29 is \u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b8\u05d4, the type of wall surrounding a city (HALOT, 297).<\/p>\n<h3>Walls of Water<\/h3>\n<p>In ancient times, these walls could be anything from the great stone walls of Middle Bronze age fortifications to the sloped teminos walls that were not so much a barrier as impediment.\u00a0 Teminos walls often marked the precincts of ancient temples.\u00a0 They served as a warning to the uninitiated that they are trespassing upon holy ground.\u00a0 If what we are dealing with is a teminos wall, then the height of the water would seem deceptively less intimidating to those passing through the midst of the walls of water.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing to consider is that the bitter lakes were not that deep.\u00a0 The water was probably no more than 20 feet in depth.\u00a0 But this is more than enough to be deadly.\u00a0 While the bottom of the lake was like dry land for those passing through by foot, Pharaoh\u2019s army was using chariots.<\/p>\n<h3>Egyptian Chariots<\/h3>\n<p>The Egyptian chariot was a weapon of speed and intimidation.\u00a0 A pair of soldier operated each chariot: a driver and an archer.\u00a0 The driver would control a team of horses and focus on driving, while the archer could fire his arrows off in practically any direction.\u00a0 The combination of driver and archer made the Egyptian chariot deadly and fast, a fearsome weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The wheels on these chariots were thin, like the wheels on a ten-speed bicycle.\u00a0 This was an adaptation of the Levantine chariot to Egyptian sandy conditions.\u00a0 These chariot wheels were designed to cut through sand, and the carriages were made out of light-weight materials.\u00a0 So if the chariot got stuck in sand, it could be lifted out of the sand easily.<\/p>\n<p>However, this same design that worked so well in dry sand had the opposite effect in silt.\u00a0 The wheels cut into the mud which caused them to get stuck and even caused the wheels to break off from their axils (Exod14:25).\u00a0 And in the morning, the Israelites found the Egyptians dead on the seashore (Exod 14:29).\u00a0 With the charioteers stuck and burdened with heavy armor, even 20 ft of water proved too much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Movie versions of the exodus portray the parting of the Reed (Red) Sea as massive vertical walls of water that the Israelites passed between.\u00a0 The Egyptians are shown blindly following after the Israelites, possibly out of fear of Pharaoh.\u00a0 But I have to ask.\u00a0 Who in their right mind would enter into a box canyon&hellip;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/20\/parting-red-sea\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":903,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"spay_email":"","jetpack_publicize_message":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[131,73,130,106,129,132,108],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"http:\/\/www.egyptandthebible.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/RamessesDefeatingHittites2.jpg","jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.1 -
